Game Review - Viewtiful Joe on Nintendo Gamecube

Written by Awiui on February 24, 2017 @ 10:58 pm

Ahhh Viewtiful Joe, one of the coolest games in existance. I say coolest, because that is how you will feel while playing this, punching dumb robots, giant dinosaurs, evil sharks, big tanks, jets, ninjas, you name it.

The whole premise of this game is being a cool movie superhero, all while rescuing your girl, beating bad guys, and saving the imaginary world you do not live in, except it affects the real...world(?).

Anyways, what I'm getting at is that Viewtiful Joe is not a story driven game, it's a beat em up game with awesome mechanics and great difficulty designed to look super cool. Bosses are specially hard and require an understanding and good execution of all of Joe's abilities. Stages are full of little secrets that can make your life easier, but may require exploring or planning ahead to get.

Visually, its nothing short of its name. The game makes you feel like you are watching a movie when Joe uses his abilities and the overall style is so appealing and unique, it just makes getting into that being-a-superhero-that-kicks-ass mood so easy.

Character wise, most of the cast is not developed or interesting. As I said, this is not a story driven game. However, Joe is the definition of cool when he becomes a superhero and uses all his abilities while destroying his opponents, so he manages to be really likeable.

Music and sound effects are arranged pretty well to build tension to big fights, enhance comic moments and just make every move feel like the most awesome thing you have done in a while; all of this while keeping the in-movie feel to the whole game. This, however, can make the sound effects get repetitive.

10 on Gameplay, since its what makes this game as good as it is and it never gets boring. Something I learned thanks to this was: "If a boss is taking way too long to kill and you get bored, you are not killing him the right way". Difficulty is also high enough to be challenging and making you get better at using all of Joe's abilities and items. (Don't be a wuss and play on Kids difficulty, kills the experience IMO).

6 on Story because it is a generic story and very few characters are really memorable. However, due to its genre and premise, story isn't really a necessity and more of a plus for the game.

10 on Graphics and Visuals, because it takes the game's premise and runs with it, making a very unique combination between movies and comics that is appealing and used very well in everything, from level design, to combat mechanics.

8 on Sound because while the effects add to the coolness of the fights it can get a bit repetitive, specially at the later stages of the game

8 Overall because of the gameplay, difficulty, and experience of playing Viewtiful Joe. It is a legitimately fun game from beginning to end, just don't expect it to have any deep meaning or groundbreaking storyline behind it.
