Elemental Gimmick Gear is an action, puzzle, mystery, role playing game for the Sega Dreamcast. It incorporates both science-fiction and traditional fantasy elements, and, insofar as the science-fiction is concerned, it can be classified as taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting. It is not cut-scene heavy, but does feature four shorts that it calls 'movies' at various points in the story. Play largely happens in a two-dimensional player-navigated scrolling environment, interspersed with boss battles in three-dimensional environments, as well as featuring at least one mini-game that takes place on a racing track.
Elemental Gimmick Gear takes place in a nebulous, vague and dangerous future on Earth where mankind's population is significantly smaller than what we're used to today. The story follows the strange connection between the protagonist, a man named Leon, and the happenings surrounding an ancient excavated ruin called Fogna, a place that has launched human vehicular technology ahead an untold amount of years with the discovery of a strange egg-shaped vehicle the protagonist is found in by scientists a hundred years before the start of the game. They dub these vehicles Elemental Gimmick Gear (hence the title of the game) or E.G.G. and begin to use them for everything from farming to war.
However, just before the protagonist wakes from his ancient slumber beginning the game, the ruins come to life and send out mysteries horrifyingly large root-like tentacles into the surrounding area, destroying buildings, injuring and killing people, and they grow strange flower-like structures on them that exude what appears to be fog, giving rise to the name Fogna. Soon after, Leon awakens, but has no memories of his past, finding that he has been asleep in stasis for over a hundred years. He is greeted by Dr. Selen, who advises him that he might find out something about his past if he ventures into Fogna and goes into the ruins he was discovered in, and the game is set in motion.
The game is dark, phantasmagorical, and surreal, offering up a unique world of mixed technology and nature, with the four classical elements as both a theme and a gameplay mechanic. The human drama, the mysterious nature of the ruins and its activities, and the mystery of Leon's origins and the birthplace of the Elemental Gimmick Gear vehicle, coupled with the exciting and familiar musical score, and the otherworldly visuals, come together to produce an entirely dissociating but fulfilling gaming experience worthy of the under-appreciated Sega Dreamcast.
