A downloadable content (DLC) package focusing on Luigi, titled New Super Luigi U was announced to celebrate the Year of Luigi. Playing as Luigi, the DLC alters all the levels with a reduced time limit of 100 seconds. With Mario excluded from the playable character lineup, his replacement is Nabbit, to become playable in multiplayer. Nabbit is immune to enemy damage, and while he cannot use power-ups himself, any he does collect are converted into 1-Ups at the end of the stage. There are two different versions of the game: the downloadable content for the main game on the Nintendo eShop on June 20, 2013 and a standalone retail version on July 26, 2013 in Europe and on August 25, 2013 in North America. Unlike the downloadable content game, the retail version does not require having New Super Mario Bros. U to play it.
