Game Review - Medal of Honor (2010) on Xbox 360

Written by jimmyb on April 22, 2011 @ 6:26 pm

This morning I completed the new Medal of Honor game. Previous to the release of the game I'd seen a few clips and trailers of game play and I thought it looked really good. I got the game a few days before release and was quite impressed with it. On release day, and a few days after I kept hearing about how it was getting poor reviews. However, I couldn't figure out why it was getting such low ratings. There were a few times when I got a bit frustrated but it certainly didn't warrant ratings as low as 6/10.

The game plays similar to Modern Warfare 2 and in some ways I thought it looked better. The default control scheme is also very similar which makes the game very easy to jump right into the action which is exactly how it starts. The game puts you and a team of soldiers in Afghanistan where you'll work together and fight through some crazy situations. The story itself is decent, however it seemed a bit short with a quick, abrupt ending. Something that really made me enjoy this game was the fact that it was based on a real present day situation. It takes place in Afghanistan against the Taliban. I think being able to relate to a real life event makes it that much better.

You play through the game as multiple characters however the action all takes place within the same general regions. By the end of the game, the characters and squads come together for a nice end mission. The graphics within the game are quite well done, however there are a couple frustrating invisible walls or areas you'd think you'd be able to explore which are not reachable. The detail to characters and weapons is some of the best I've seen and at times the line between realistic and computer generated graphics is blurry. The environment detail is also very well done and many objects within the world can be manipulated and destroyed (rocks, trees, etc...).

The game also features a new, unique mode called Tier 1. You play through the single player game, however it's timed. Getting skill kills, will stop the clock for a few seconds allowing your overall time of completion to be lower. Skill kills include headshots, multiple kills from a single bullet and melee attacks. I have yet to try out this mode, however, I definitely will when I get the chance. You will be ranked against your friends and their times on LIVE.

The games multiplayer component also looks like a lot of fun. Again, I haven't had a chance to play through a couple rounds, but I did watch my friend play through a few matches. You're able to select from 3 classes, Rifleman, Spec Ops, and Sniper. Each class lets you choose from a default array of weapons which are tailored to those classes. You can level up and unlock new weapons and 'perks'. There's a variety of different multiplayer matches, just the same with Modern Warfare 2.

Medal of Honor does come with a few issues though. Even on a Normal difficulty level I found that even after taking 3-4 hits I was dead. The problem there is that since many of the environment objects are destroyable it can be hard to hunker down behind something to recover health. Sometimes it's also hard to tell the direction you're being shot at from. I had also seen some complaints about the enemy AI, but all I noticed was smart enemies that were able to see, target and shoot at you from relatively far distances. That did create for some frustration, but really it just added to the realism. One major pet peeve and issue I had in the game was after reloading the characters failed to use the charging handles on their guns, which means no bullet was ever loaded into the chamber. When you insert a magazine into an assault rifle it does not automatically put a round into the chamber, this is what the charging handle is used for. If they had just added that one extra animation to the weapons and reloading sequence I would be very happy. The odd thing is, it does happen once or twice but it's not consistant at all. I also would have liked to have seen a storyline which was longer. I feel like I completed the entire single player campaign within a couple hours so it's a good thing there's Tier 1 mode and multiplayer. I feel like I had just gotten comfortable with the game, was starting to really bond with the characters and their story and then it just ends. I also would have liked to have seen a wider variety of weapons throughout the game. Don't get me wrong I loved having and using the M4A1, but it would have been nice to see some others like the SCAR(-L) in there as well.

Overall I am impressed and happy with the results of the new Medal of Honor game. While I haven't played Tier 1 mode or multiplayer I am sure those modes will keep my high praises about the game the same. A few issues with the game don't keep me from enjoying it as a whole, but they certainly could be looked at for future improvement. If you enjoyed Modern Warfare, Battlefield: Bad Company 1 and/or 2 or any of these recent similar games, I think you will like Medal of Honor. I am certainly looking forward to playing through Tier 1 as well as getting some multiplayer time in. I do hope, the series continues in the modern warfare setting.
