Mother 3 is the last entry of the Mother/Earthbound Trilogy. For those not familiar, Mother 1 is Earthbound 0 or Beginnings, as Nintendo released virtually on 2015, with protagonist Ninten. Mother 2 is Earthbound, where the protagonist is the more famous Ness; and finally Mother 3 has Lucas as a protagonist. While I haven't played the first, I have played both Earthbound and Mother 3, and even though they are sequels, they are very indirect sequels.
Personally, this is my favorite out of the 2, and from what I've heard about Mother 1, of the whole trilogy. It is also one of my favorite games of all time. There are very few things to not like about Mother 3.
-It has a great cast of unique but relatable characters, that grow throughout the game and make you wish them the best (or the worst, if you talk villains).
-Awesome music, as the franchise has always delivered.
-A battle system that combines classic RPG turn-based combat with rhythm and franchise-only mechanics that requires focus and skill.
-A great story, that while very distantly related to the past games is not related enough so you need to play the other games.
So, is there anything wrong with Mother 3?
Nothing necessarily wrong, just things that are personal preference. For example, unlike Earthbound, the map is limited to the part of the story you are at, leaving exploring freely behind and making for more linear gameplay. Also, since the story is divided by chapters, some chapters are not as engaging because your party changes a lot. While Lucas is the protagonist you play as him fully until chapter 4, and some of the chapters before that feel a little draggy.
In conclusion, Mother 3 is a great game that I personally recommend to anyone. For any fan of RPGs, the Mother franchise, or just fan of Lucas (like me) because of Smash or whatever it is a MUST play.
You think RPGs are boring because of repetitive, auto-pilot battles? Mother 3 has a great battle system that requires you to do more than just selecting what to do, has a nice learning curve and difficulty level.
You want great story and characters to go with it? Mother 3 does more than enough to make you engage completely with its story and characters. I guarantee you will get the feels at some point.
You played Earthbound and hate Porky? Mother 3 will give you what you need for that.
You enjoyed Mother 1 or 2? You will love Mother 3.
