Game Review - Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China on PC

Written by HyperDebtRay on February 12, 2018 @ 10:48 pm

This game is really similar to Mark of the Ninja except with the Assassin's Creed franchise. The main objective during gameplay is also similar, get to your location or kill an NPC without getting spotted by the guards.

As an avid fan of Assassin's Creed I thought that this game could have had way more potential as everything about this game except the art style was unpolished.

Combat was clunky, useless and a complete mess.

Most of the time Shao is locked in animation while you underestimate the range of the swing, in combat.
Useless because by the time you get use to the gameplay (avoiding sight cones) you totally forget about combat controls once you are forced into one.
A complete mess because blocking sometimes doesn't register and enemies look all the same, are you really going to remember the fine details of how each enemy reacts to certain move-sets?

The difficulty can be brutal, you will end up having to try different approaches to certain segments including the use of distraction tools. To make things even more difficult, the controls are clumsy (im using controller) when moving from ledge to ceiling to ledge (example). Sometimes its hard to see where things are climbable, but at least they painted these damn things red. If the sight cone juuuuuust touches you by 1 millimeter on the screen, BAM!, all the enemies go nuts and gets on your tail.

Secondary objectives are more trouble than it's worth and sort of useless, you will end up hitting "Restart Checkpoint" more frequently trying attempt them. They only give you bonus points, even though you'd earn enough from Shadow Gold or Assassin Gold without these secondaries.

That being said, for people with OCD don't even think about Shadow Gold on every segment, I personally have spent more time hitting the "Restart Checkpoint" than actually having fun...

hrrrmpph.

The only thing I liked about this game is the pseudo-free-running segments.
Annnndd... Shao's assassin threads, pretty badass looking assassin robes.
