This is the first Taiko no Tatsujin game on the Wii U. The HD arcade interface was first seen on 3DS and parts of it on Wii 5, but it isn't until this game that it is presented in its full glory. Being backwards-compatible to the controllers of the Wii, this Taiko no Tatsujin has a huge array of control options to choose from; be it the Wii U Gamepad's buttons, touchscreen, or the old Wiimote and its Tatacon.
The songlist starts at 70 songs, both free and paid downloadable content, including outfit items and additional playable songs, are available via the Nintendo eShop. This game is also the first console game to introduce the Vocaloid genre.
Together with the staple 2-4 player regular performance, a new multiplayer mode is being introduced as well - Baton Touch Play, where multiple players alternately play a single song in a relay race-like fashion. The game also supports the Wii U GamePad with a touchscreen drum, and can be played with the GamePad alone without needing a television set.
