Devil Daggers is an endless and fast-paced first-person shooter inspired by 1990s shooters and arcade games. It is played in an abyssal arena where the character controlled by the player shoots endless waves of enemies such as flying skulls and floating snake-like creatures with an endless amount of daggers. The visual style with unfiltered textures is crude and dark and resemble games of twenty years earlier. As the arena has enemies in all directions, eventually with more than 100 at a time, 3D positional audio is used to determine where to move quickly. The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible.
A single encounter with enemies is deadly, so many game sessions no longer last than a single minute. Next to quick movement the daggers can be shot in two ways. The left mouse button is used for an endless stream and a quick tap acts as a burst shot. Later on the right mouse button can be used for homing shots. Smaller enemies can be taken out with a single hit, but larger enemies have bright red weak points that need to be targeted. By defeating enemies, demonic crystals are left behind. These can be harvested to increase the power of the daggers, adding magic abilities with psychedelic effects providing more damage or slowing down time. Next to the basic movement there is also circle strafing, bunny hopping, dagger jumps, speed boosts and double jumps, often elements from FPS titles in the 1990s that focused on skill-based movement.
Players compete on worldwide leaderboards for the highest scores. These scores have an eye icon next to them. This can be used to watch any replay of any player, for instance to learn new techniques. The game has thirteen enemy types in total and procedural decal effects.
