Adol is travelling through new lands, in search of more adventure, when he hears of the vanished desert city of Kefin. He sets off to investigate this ancient city's disappearance.

Ys V Expert was a second version of the game and had a higher difficulty level. This is a list of known differences between the original Ys V and the Expert mode remake of Ys V:

• Time Attack Mode
• There is an extra dungeon behind the stairs of Dorman's Mansion
• It has twenty floors with each giving a prize
• Skeleton enemies with shields block periodically
• Stronger variants of normal enemies throughout the game
• New second area where Master Rod is injured in Northwood
• In the third area (originally the second) of Northwood there's a new tree enemy
• In the East Wing of Kefin City the falling rock puzzle has been revamped and now includes obstacles and switches
