Ashita no Joe Densetsu is an adaptation of the popular manga and anime series Ashita no Joe, created by Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba.
You play the role of the titular Joe Yabuki as he rises from his beginnings as a vagrant escapee from an orphanage, to his rise up the ranks of amateur boxing, part of his professional career, his fall from grace, and his return to boxing, all the way to his final fight with José Mendoza.
As the story progresses, the game stages alternate between all out street brawls against multiple opponents, culminating on one-on-one fights against a single fighter, or regulation boxing matches against a single fighter. The regulation boxing matches are clean one on one fights, but your opponents on street fights play dirty, using kicks, rushing headbutts, or flying attacks.
As Joe, you only have your wits, skills, and very powerful punches to defend yourself from the constant attacks. You have to time your punches, dodges and blocks in time with your opponent's attacks - and make sure you use the right one - or you risk leaving yourself open to a knock out in very few seconds.
