In E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Escape from Planet Earth there are two main modes of play. There is an "overworld" where the player is playing as Elliot riding a bike with E.T. in the basket. When Elliot touches a red and blue rotating disk it will change into a maze game. In the maze game the playable character is E.T. and the goal is to collect the disk and find the exit.

There are many obstacles that can be found in the mazes including: spiders, scorpions, water, and ice. There are ice powerups that can be collected in order to freeze one square of water, which can then be walked over.
