Disney Phonics Quest

Disney Phonics Quest is an educational game for children aged five to eight. The title aims to develop the phonics skills of children. It stars the Disney character Mickey Mouse as a sorcerer's apprentice in medieval times. He takes a peek into the sorcerer's book while cleaning and six items that belong to the wizard are taken away in a magical storm. By completing six mini-games the items can be found back before the sorcerer returns. Mickey travels to the town, the forest and the mountain and from there the activities can be accessed:

Duckbill Printin' Press: Donald needs to complete his reading lessons. The words are read out loud and the player has to select the corresponding word from a selection on a board.

The Genie's Riddle: guess the correct items based on the word shown by the genie. More difficult levels introduce recognizing rhyming words by completing lines with a missing word.

Goofy's Metalworks: Goofy reads out loud a requirement, for instance the amount of words on a shield that start with a certain letter and then the player chooses a number as the answer by dragging the shield to the correct area. A similar technique is used for instance to recognize the amount of syllables a word has.

Mickey's Dragon Daycare: take care of a number of identical looking dragons. The parents provide description to show which mother they belong to, for instance by describing words shown as pictures on the shirts they are wearing. The player then has to select the correct dragons.

Minnie's Musical Meadow: Mickey needs to recognize rhyming words or starting sounds in order to compose the lyrics to Minnie's songs.

Pete's Phonics Quarry: pictures need to be dragged to match the words that are shown on a variety of stones.

In most games there can only be a small number of misses or progress is halted. Each item that is found back is stored in its original location in the castle again. The game has four difficulty levels that provide a personalized experience as the activity progresses. The game tracks the performance and children can choose to move between difficulty levels freely. The game supports voice recognition as input as well. The skills that are developed are consonant blends, letter sounds and recognition, multiple pronunciations, reading comprehension, rhymes, spelling, syllable recognition, vowel digraphs, vowel sounds and word building.
