The Colossal Cave Adventure game, produced in the '70s, was the historic first "interactive fiction" game, in which the computer would simulate and describe a situation and the user would type in what to do next, in simple English.
The user would thus be a part of an ongoing story in a fantasy setting — in this case, an exploration of Colossal Cave in Kentucky. But this Colossal Cave, though remarkably similar to its real-life counterpart, was also very different: Magic was afoot in the cave...

Crowther & Woods' inaugural text adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure figured prominently as a plot device in an episode (entitled "Adventure") of AMC's early-computing television drama Halt And Catch Fire, so to allow modern viewers the additional context needed to appreciate the historical reference, the TV network hosted a free web-playable illustrated version of the game complete with contextual hints.
In a nutshell, this early text adventure challenges the player to successfully navigate a fantastical cave complex, looking for treasures and surviving devious puzzles, monsters and mazes.
