Mirai Nikki is a survival adventure game based on the manga with the same name. The protagonist of the story is a junior high-school student, Yukiteru Amano. One morning, he located his future diary following a strange directions that appeared on his mobile phone. Upon reading a diary for a while, he stumbled on a paragraph describing his own death. Unknowingly, he ended up being pulled in a deadly game of survival by the future diary which has been changing owners, making Yukiteru the 13th owner.

The game features original story in the series, written and supervised by the original manga author, Esuno Sakae. During the game which mostly plays like a visual novel, various choices will lead to different ending, most of them bad, which requires replaying and a bit of luck to get the wanted outcome. The game also features character switching system which lets you select different character after each new entry in the diary which changes the course of the story.

Original game came before the anime adaptation of the series and features no voice-acting, but the Re:write game version came out two years after, featuring several new features as well as full voice-acting by the same actors from the animated TV series.
