Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time is a puzzle game based on BBC's long running TV series Doctor Who. It features the eleventh doctor and Amy Pond who retrieve an SOS signal from the Jones family. After arriving at the family's spaceship they find out that it has been boarded by a Dalek scientist that is looking for a time engine. An explosion occurs and the family is scattered through time. Now it's up to the doctor and his companion to travel through time in an attempt to save them. Locations that will be visited include an Incan temple, the frozen tombs of Telos and a Dalek ship.

The game is played from a slightly tilted top-down perspective and the player takes control of both the doctor and Amy. For each level the player has to navigate the two heroes to the exit while solving puzzles in the process. Puzzles often involve activating switches to open up new passages through the levels. These can be activated by standing on them or by pushing boxes onto them. Some switches are binary and has to be activated once while pressure switches need to be kept weighted down. The two characters need to cooperate to advance. For example, one activates a switch so that the other can get to the next. The doctor and Amy has different capabilities. Only the doctor can push and climb over boxes while only Amy can move over thin floor tiles and crawl through gaps. There are also bad guys that have to be avoided, including Cybermen, Daleks and Silurians.

Throughout the levels the player will find time orbs, fragment of the time ship's drive system. Collecting these makes it easier to fix the ship. Other collectibles include gold coins that can be used to vaporise the metal of cybermen.
