Penguin Diner is a time management game where the player controls Penny, the Penguin, and must earn enough money to help her move back to her family. She gets a job at a cafeteria as a waitress and must use her ice skaters to quickly serve the customers.
The player controls Penny by simply clicking at elements at the game, including customers, tables and food ready to be served. When a customer arrives, the player must first assign them a table (the player chooses which table). After moving to their table, the customer spends a few seconds on the menu to call the waitress again to assign their meal. The player must move back to the customer, automatically noting the request and the meal starts being prepared. Once prepared, the player must grab the meal and bring it to the customer that requested it. After a few more seconds eating their food, the customer moves out and leaves tip on the table for the player to pick up.
Although the mechanics are quite simple, customers are extremely impatient and every action of the player should be done in quick succession. The only pause the game has is the pause button, so all customers are waiting at the same time and serving one customer does not affect another one's patience. After leaving, the happier the customer was by their service, the more tip they leave on the table. The player must gather enough tip to surpass the needed amount of money displayed as orange text at the cashier. The green text at the cashier represents how much money the player already made that day.
After a day is finished, the profit, or the difference of the green money to the orange one, can be used to buy upgrades to help the player progress more easily through the game.
