Last Legion UX

Much like Super Robot Spirits, Last Legion UX lets players take control of a fully operational battle Mech for deathmatch against a friend or the CPU. Unlike Super Robot Spirits, Hudson's LastLegion UX doesn't limit players to a set arena or enclosed fighting space. Instead, the battlefield is a free-for-all maze of tunnels, towers and death.

The one- or two-player fight-fest takes place in scenarios representing the four elements of earth, fire, air and water. The story pits the world-conquering army, Light Ride, against the united forces of Union IV, both factions employing high-powered mech robots to do battle. Within the four worlds, there is a special ore called 'PowerStone' (no relation to Capcom's arcade fighter) from which can be derived a powerful, pure form of energy. This energy is what drives each legion's powers and can provide great weapon strength. Accordingly, locating one during battle can give you a big boost -- and stealing it from your enemies can render them immobile and a sitting duck.

Players can choose from six mechs in the story mode, each of which requires different strategies to be most effective, meaning you can select the machine most suited to your combat style. Weapons, both arm-type and ammo must be chosen, along with shields. The arsenal ranges from powerful lasers to quick mounted machine-guns. Certainly enough choice to satisfy even the most blood-hungry gamer.

While the single-player mode is sure to keep players happy, the game's real fun and challenge lies in its multiplayer option. Because some of the stages stretch multiple levels up or down, the battle mode also offers the choice to toggle between a horizontally or vertically split screen.

But levels aren't the only aspect of LastLegion that will have an affect on gameplay. Different mech robots have different abilities. One mech, for example, might have a high ability to fly, but very low shield power. Another might be great with hand-to-hand combat, but too heavy to fly. Hudson has created the game with this in mind, creating a balanced fighting system which should make for a lot of fun and even more strategy.
