Unreal Tournament

From the creators of Unreal comes Unreal Tournament, a competition that tests your reflexes and competitive spirit in deadly arenas.

Unreal Tournament is a stand alone game (e.g. you don't need the first Unreal to play it) that provides the ultimate in multiplayer excitement whether you're hooked up to the Internet or not. Let's repeat: Unreal Tournament kicks just as much butt whether you're playing by (or with, as the case may be) yourself or on the Internet.

Unreal Tournament's got it all: a ton of amazing levels, kick-ass weapons, brain-melting modes of play, unbelievably deadly Bots, and a slew of other features bound to have your happiness glands working overtime!

Unreal Tournament is - hands down - the most feature - filled game of its kind to come along. There are more bells and whistles here than in all of the Rhineland's cuckoo clock shops. Let's put it this way: if you want it, Unreal Tournament probably provides it (or least provides an option for it).

  • Novice Mode: This Botmatch mode will make all of the Bots in your game move more slowly and inflict less damage with their attacks. This is a great starting point for someone new to first person shooters.

  • Hardcore Mode: Only for the pros. In this mode, all of the bots against which you play move MUCH faster and inflict A LOT more damage with their standard attacks.

  • Enhanced Bot AI: Using the Bot artificial intelligence in Unreal as a base, Epic went through and gave the Bots in Unreal Tournament a big ol' shot of steroids. Their basic deathmatching skills have been virtually perfected, their understanding of all the different game rules is perfect, their ability to fully navigate levels is uncanny, and their threat to your existence is very real.

  • Radio Chatter: Each of the commands at your disposal in the game is accompanied by both a text message on screen AND an audio message. Pleas for back-up or for cover fire are accompanied by pre-recorded sequences communicating your needs. Making this especially cool is the fact that you can hear your opponents' messages too (even if you're playing against botsÉcuz bots are people, too).

  • New Command Line Options: This one's only for you geeky, server-running-type dudes. But if you're one of these folk, then you'll be happy. Virtually any option you want to tweak now be accessed via the UT command line. Nice and easy!

  • Improved User Interface: One of the biggest problems that plagues traditional team-based games is this: how do you effectively give a team member all the info he/she needs to play effectively WITHOUT overwhelming or confusing them? Up until now, there's never been a satisfactory answer to that conundrum. But Unreal Tournament FINALLY has a solution. Each game type (deathmatch, capture the flag, domination, and assault) has a unique heads up display (HUD) that gives you ALL the info you need to play well WITHOUT bombarding you with too much info. When you look up "stream-lined" in the dictionary, a picture of one of these HUDs will probably appear.

  • UBrowser: One of the biggest hassles about playing games online USED to be finding a server on which to play. You had to go download a third-party server querying application, you had to set up filters, you - basically - had to go through a hard time. No more. Unreal Tournament provides THE easiest way to find a game on the Internet. Just click on the "Play Online" button and - boom! - UT brings you a list of games currently being played. When you see one that you want, double click on it. For once, the marketing-speak is true: getting online to play a game has NEVER been easier.

  • Spectator Cams: Watching a game of Unreal Tournament has the potential to be almost as much fun as playing it. Now, thanks to the revolutionary SpectatorCams, you can enter a game (either one you've created with Bots or one taking place on a server) and hop around to designated SpectatorCams to view the action on the level. Even cooler, you can "attach" your point of view to one of the players in the level and view the action that way. Either way you choose, it's a very cool feature and a great way to learn for people new to the world of online gaming.

  • Jump Mode: Jump twice as high as normal. It's sorta' like having a never-ending pair of jumpboots on. The impact these boots have on gameplay is almost indescribable. It changes the dynamic completely.
