A Hard Time is a jail simulator in which the player takes on the role of an inmate.
The game starts with a character creator in which the player can design his own inmate and pick the crime for which he was put into custody. The goal of the game is to sit out the term of 60 days in a high security prison. Each time the player breaks the rules his sentence is elongated. To avoid being molested by other inmates the player has to maintain a reputation. Like an RPG the main character has various statistics such as strength, intelligence and agility. These can be increased through regular exercise, meals and reading in the library. The more reputation the main character has the more he will be approached by other inmates to perform tasks such as harming or protecting another inmate. Solving these "quests" gains money which can be used to bribe other prisoners who might not be so friendly or the guards to reduce punishments.
Combat in the game makes use of the developer's own wrestling mechanics used in previous wrestling games. It is also possible to join a gang (based on your skin color).
