Rogue Legacy is an indie platformer with roguelike elements.
The goal of Rogue Legacy is to explore a randomly generated dungeon, defeat four bosses in each of the four unique environments of the dungeon, and defeat the final boss.
Due to the difficulty of the game, the player is expected to constantly die after some time. All the gold gathered by the character during a game is transferred to his heir, the new character chosen by the player when he decides to launch a new game. The new character has the possibility to buy equipment or abilities using that gold that will also be transferred to the following heirs. So, the player has the possibility to make his characters progressively stronger by gathering more gold and letting their current character die to buy more abilities (because it's not possible to spend the gold while inside the dungeon).
Another novelty is that the player doesn't have the ability to create a character by choosing all their characteristics like in a typical role-playing video game. Instead, they can choose between 3 randomly generated characters. The classes of these characters are random as well as their traits. The traits represent genetic particularities that can be advantages or disadvantages. Most of theses traits are intended to be humorous like being color-blind (the screen will be black and white during the whole game) or having irritable bowel syndrome. This system forces the player to use different characters with different characteristics from one game to another.
