I am actually going to start FF XV today.
I remember that they've added a lot of interesting gameplay things with those DLC. Like first person view mode, for example. And yeah, I relate to being preoccupied with other games. There are so many great titles that I want to try, but they're all usually 50+ hours, so I don't want to replay some of them just now. Also most of the time games make more sense if you play them in release order. If I'd play Metal Gear Solid in chronological order, the story would not feel as surprising as it was.
Yeah, I understand what you mean about going back to graphics. Usually for me it's like if I start with the oldest game and go to the newer ones, I don't pay attention to graphics, but if I go back from newest to oldest - it's a bit of a pain. I'm glad you enjoyed FF XV. Have you considered giving it another chance with DLC and all the new gameplay stuff they added recently? Maybe it will somewhat fix the story, who knows.
Oh, I see where you're coming from. VII-X seem more interesting than the older ones. Although, I am yet to play them. I decided to check out FF XV before trying out other parts of the series. Hopefully, I'll like it. What did you think about it?
