Gran Turismo 4 expands the series with one of its largest collections of cars, tracks, and driving events, delivering a realistic racing experience centered on authentic vehicle handling and progression. Players begin by earning licenses to unlock new competitions before purchasing, tuning, and upgrading vehicles to compete across a wide variety of championships, endurance races, and special events.

The game's career mode rewards success with credits used to build an ever-growing garage featuring hundreds of licensed vehicles from manufacturers around the world. Cars can be modified with performance upgrades, suspension tuning, tire compounds, and transmission adjustments, allowing players to tailor each vehicle to different racing conditions and event requirements. Alongside traditional circuit racing, players can also compete in rally events, one-make races, manufacturer cups, and driving missions that test precision, consistency, and advanced driving techniques.

A new addition to the series is B-Spec Mode, which allows players to take on the role of a race manager rather than the driver. Instead of controlling the car directly, players issue commands to an AI driver, adjusting their pace, instructing when to overtake, and managing pit stop strategy during longer events. As the AI driver gains experience, their abilities improve, making them increasingly capable of tackling more demanding races.
