Ninja Gaiden Sigma is an enhanced version of Ninja Gaiden, following master ninja Ryu Hayabusa on a quest to recover the Dark Dragon Blade after it is stolen by the forces of the Vigoor Empire. His pursuit takes him across dangerous cities, ancient ruins, and mysterious temples as he battles fiends, rival warriors, and powerful bosses to prevent an ancient evil from being unleashed.

Combat is built around speed, precision, and mastery of an extensive arsenal of weapons, each with its own move set, combos, and upgrade path. Alongside swords, staffs, and other melee weapons, Ryu can wield projectile weapons and devastating Ninpo magic to overcome increasingly difficult encounters. The game's demanding combat rewards quick reflexes, careful timing, and learning enemy attack patterns rather than relying on button mashing.

Exploration complements the action with platforming sections, environmental puzzles, hidden collectibles, and upgrades that improve Ryu's abilities throughout the adventure. This enhanced release also introduces graphical improvements, new enemies and bosses, additional costumes, and playable chapters starring Rachel, offering a different perspective on the story while expanding the content beyond the original release.
