Metal Gear Solid PlayStation 1
I still think Metal Gear Solid is the best game in the titular franchise. Hideo Kojima got progressively carried away with the self-conscious "kitsch" of his storylines which made the drama hard to bite into, but Metal Gear Solid finds that line between realism and melodramatic thriller that drew everyone into these games in the first place. On top of that, Shadow Moses is the franchise's greatest setting. The snowfall is beautiful and the metallic innards of the base are just as frigid. The complex is very visually varied (a major flaw of MGS2), and the heavy ambiance accompanies a major feeling of progression as you get deeper and deeper into the facility. Compare that to 2 and 3's more open settings, even though they aren't necessarily any more or less linear. I also have to say that I love the hand-drawn faces in the Codec more than the 3D models,...
